How many times can Hardwood floors be refinished?

–Allison (Brentwood, CA)

Solid hardwoods can be refinished up to 7 times and engineered hardwoods can be refinished up to 3 times.  We recommend selecting the floor that fits your lifestyle and will last the longest for you and your family.  But make sure that you consult a professional before you do it yourself.

I like the look of hardwoods for our bathrooms, but my husband wants vinyl because of the moisture. Is engineered wood truly a viable option?

–Natalie (Malibu, CA)

Engineered wood is an option for areas of your home where light moisture will be a factor, but not potential flooding which could happen in a bathroom.  Vinyl would be a better flooring option. Water and heat will cause expansion and contraction of solid wood, and to a lesser extent, engineered woods.

What is the best way to clean my Laminate Floors?

–Richard (Reseda, CA)

Mostly I recommend using a large dustmop or Swiffer type sweeper. The pads are easily replaced when dirty and pick up all the dust. Do not use the swiffer with the solution as this will lead to a filmy build up on your finish.  If you mix 10 parts water to one part white vinegar you can damp mop your

flooring with this solution and it kills bacteria. For those of you who want that “Pine-sol” smell of clean, remember to dilute it to just about a quarter cup per bucket of water.

When damp mopping make sure the mop is just damp enough to clean the floor there can never be a layer of water or puddles left behind after mopping, this will damage and warp the floor. Remember to avoid using a mop and shine product, wax or a vegetable oil based product to clean the laminate floor, they can leave a dull surface.

As far as vacuuming, It is fine as long as the vacuum cleaner you use doesn’t have a beater bar because it can scratch the laminate flooring. Wipe up spills immediately, use a paper towel or soft cloth to wipe up the spill, then clean with a damp cloth. Spills that aren’t wiped up can cause the laminate floor to fade. Read the warranty from the laminate flooring manufacturer to determine the best cleaning method for your floor.  Follow the manufacturer recommendations so the warranty stays in place. Some manufacturers also offer floor cleaning supplies specific to your brand of laminate flooring.

If you decide to use the manufacturers product, call them to find out where you can buy it locally.

Because of my proximity to the beach, should I opt for engineered wood rather than solid?

–Jonathan (Torrance, CA)

Engineered hardwoods are a great option since they are a more stable floor for homes next to the beach and in general. There will be much less expansion.

Torrance is approximately 5 miles from the beach depending on how far South you are. This is definitely a factor in cities like Hermosa Beach, Manhattan Beach, Playa del Rey and Marina Del Rey with homes that are less than 1/4 mile from the beach.

Is laminate flooring a good choice with my Pets?

–Kim (Rancho Palos Verdes, CA)

Yes you can have the great look of hardwood floors without worrying about your four-legged friends scratching up the floors. We strongly recommend Laminate over Hardwood for active families with kids and or pets. If your cat or dog has an accident, be sure to wipe it up as soon as possible to prevent any damage to your flooring. Today’s laminate floors are very durable and easy to maintain. We love pets too, so stick with our name brands and simple cleaning tips and even in the most active households,  your floors will look new for many years.

There are various differences between the various flooring types. For example, hardwood floors (Los Angeles), can consist of solid hardwood flooring (Los Angeles) or engineered hardwood flooring also a good choice in Los Angeles. Solid hardwood flooring (Los Angeles area) is a beautiful choice in any home and can be refinished over and over again. In many Los Angeles area Homes engineered Hardwood flooring or laminate wood flooring may be a better choice. Solid Hardwood is always beautiful and of all flooring types has the most variety .
